About this guide
Lofoten Tourism is an independent travel guide to the Lofoten Islands, from Svolvær and Henningsvær in the east to Reine and Å at the end of the road, with Trollfjord just across the strait. It is written by Patrick Kühne, a travel publisher based in Germany who runs a small group of guides to single destinations.
Not the official tourist office
This site has no connection to the municipalities of Lofoten or to any tourism body. The official destination company is Destination Lofoten AS, based in Svolvær and owned since 2021 by the municipalities and local businesses. It runs Visit Lofoten at visitlofoten.com and the tourist information in Vågan. For events, timetables, opening hours and anything that depends on local decisions, its pages have the last word.
One name causes confusion: lofoten.com is not an official site either. It belongs to a private company in Svolvær.
Where the facts come from
Distances, timetables, opening hours, sun times and climate figures on this site come from official or first-hand sources: Visit Lofoten, Store norske leksikon, MET Norway climate statistics via yr.no, Museum Nord for the museums in Kabelvåg and Borg, the Norwegian Environment Agency and Statens vegvesen for national rules such as the right of access and winter tyres, and the US Naval Observatory for sunrise, sunset and twilight. Road distances are our own calculations from OpenStreetMap data and assume summer conditions. Each page lists the sources it relies on. We checked them in October 2026.
Where sources disagree, we say so or leave the detail out. The midnight sun is the clearest case: Visit Lofoten recommends travelling between 28 May and 14 July, while the astronomical data give 26 May to 18 July for Svolvær and 28 May to 17 July for Reine. The pages give both, because the mountains decide what you actually see.
How the site earns money
Tour cards and comparison tables link to GetYourGuide and, for tours that are not listed there, to Viator. When you book through these links we receive a commission, and your price stays the same. Prices, ratings and review counts come live from the booking platform. We do not write them.
Some useful things earn us nothing, such as the SKREI museum in Kabelvåg or the Lofotr Viking Museum. We link to their own websites anyway. We are not a tour operator and do not sell tours ourselves. Questions about a booking, a cancellation or a refund go to the platform or to the operator named in the table.
How tours are chosen
A tour appears here when it starts on the Lofoten Islands or takes you from there into Trollfjord, and fits the topic of the page. Tours that only start in Vesterålen, at Sortland or Stokmarknes, are left out; what counts is where the tour starts, not the operator's name. So are pure transfers, family and couple photo shoots, versions of a tour sold only in another language when the same tour runs in English, and tours whose guest reviews are clearly weaker than the alternatives. Duration, meeting point, age limits and what is included come from the tour pages. When the platform stops listing a tour, it disappears from this site automatically.
Where a tour needs your own car, for example the stable at Hov on Gimsøya or the winter kayak base at Eggum, the pages say so.
Photos
The photos come from Unsplash and illustrate the islands and the activities. Captions describe only what the picture shows and name the photographer. A few activity pictures were taken elsewhere in Norway, and in that case the caption does not name a place.
