Lofoten lies well north of the Arctic Circle, so for several weeks in early summer the sun never sets. US Naval Observatory data for a flat horizon put the midnight sun in Svolvær from 26 May to 18 July 2027. Reine, further south-west, has it from 28 May to 17 July. Visit Lofoten gives a shorter window and advises you to travel between 28 May and 14 July. The tables assume a flat horizon. In practice Lofotveggen, the wall of peaks along the islands, hides a low sun in many places. Visit Lofoten points out that the sun cannot be seen at midnight from Svolvær or Leknes, which lie south of high mountains, and sends visitors to the outer coast, for example Laukvika or Hov.
On 21 June the sun reaches its lowest point over Svolvær at 01:03, still above the horizon. Either side of the midnight sun weeks the nights stay light as well. From early May to about 9 August the sky over Svolvær gets no darker than civil twilight, which is also why no aurora tours run in that period.
Paddling across Reinefjord at night
Saga Adventures Lofoten runs a three-hour paddle from its activity centre in Hamnøy, the fishing village at the mouth of Reinefjord. The trip starts late in the evening with a short briefing and then crosses the fjord below the peaks around Reine. The operator mentions white-tailed eagles, otters and seals as possible sightings. The base has toilets, a sitting room and free parking, and you get a warm drink there before or after the paddle. Reviews of this tour contain hardly any criticism; one guest in August 2026 missed a shared snack.
Two other kayak tours run in the same weeks. Northern Explorer paddles out every day at 22:00 for three hours and serves tea and snacks. Check the start point in your booking confirmation, because the listing does not name a village. Epic Lofoten works from a base at Vågaveien 37 near Vik beach on Vestvågøy and paddles past Vik and Haukland. It takes at most six guests per guide and at least two, only from 14 years and only for swimmers, with a weight limit of 110 kg. A spray skirt, splash jacket, waterproof gloves and a dry bag are provided, and you get photos from the trip afterwards.
The same Epic Lofoten base sells an evening paddle along the Haukland coast as a sunset tour. Between late May and mid-July there is no sunset to watch, so in those weeks it is a midnight sun tour in all but name. Later in summer, when the sun dips below the horizon again, it becomes a real sunset trip.

Riding at Hov on Gimsøya
Hov Gård sits on the northern edge of Gimsøya, the small island between Austvågøy and Vestvågøy. Its midnight sun ride lasts an hour and a half on Icelandic horses and is meant for beginners. The route climbs from the stable, passes the fish-drying racks on the way to Hovsund and comes back along the beach. Children need to be at least 8, riders can weigh at most 95 kg, and the stable asks for long trousers and closed shoes. Backpacks are not allowed on the horse.
There is no pickup. Reviewers mention that Hov is hard to reach without a car, and one guest who rode in June pointed out that there was barely a sunset to see, which is exactly what the midnight sun means. Hov Gård also rides outside the summer, and the horse riding page covers its other tour.
A late drive to the north coast
Lofoten Insight starts its four-hour evening tour at Svinøya Rorbuer in Svolvær. The guide drives a small group to the coast at Eggum and on to the sand at Gimsøya, both facing north towards the open sea, and serves a hot drink with a light snack. You need to get to Svinøya on your own. The tour is for ages 6 and over and is not suitable for wheelchair users.
By boat from Henningsvær
Henningsvær is a fishing village on two flat islands off the south-west tip of Austvågøy, 26 km by road from Svolvær. A RIB tour leaves from Tobiasbrygga at Hellandsgata 11 at 21:30 and heads for the west side of Gimsøya, with a stop out on the water around midnight. The trip takes about two and a half hours and is for ages 8 and over. Transport back to Svolvær is not included, so plan the drive or a taxi in advance.
Weather on a summer night
Summer in Lofoten is cool. The average temperature at Svolvær airport is 10.1 °C in June and 13.3 °C in July (1991–2020). June and July are the driest months: the station at Leknes records about 43 mm and 40 mm of rain in them, against 274 mm in December. The operators ask you to bring warm clothing, and Epic Lofoten adds a hat, gloves and a change of clothes for its kayak trips. The packing guide has a full list.
If you spend the night outdoors after a tour, remember that fires in or near forest and other open land are banned in Norway from 15 April to 15 September unless they clearly cannot spread. For campervans, Visit Lofoten recommends the campsites on the islands.
The other half of the year
Six months later the picture reverses. Svolvær has a short polar night from 7 December 2026 to 5 January 2027, when the sun does not rise at all, and the northern lights season runs from September to April. The page on polar night and midnight sun sets out both periods side by side, and the month-by-month guide shows which tours run when.

What travellers say about paddling Reinefjord under the midnight sun
4.9 (29 reviews) · Reviews from GetYourGuide, shortened, names abbreviated
★★★★★ Tracey (USA) · July 2026
Our guide Teresa did a great job explaining history and geology behind the fjords … She also showed and taught us about some of the plant life/ species in the sea and how these ecosystems are being affected by climate change.
★★★★★ Shuang (China) · August 2026
Had the chance to touch the moon jellyfish and had the taste of a kind of seaweed. It was cloudy day so didn’t get the chance to the de midnigj moon but still a chill experience.
★★★★★ Brigitte (Netherlands) · July 2026
Even though the weather was not very good, we still had a nice time seeing Reine from the water.
★★★★★ Xianglong (Hungary) · August 2026
Awesome experience. But I think the view during the winter is gonna be even better!
★★★★★ Melicent (France) · August 2026 Translated
We were not cold at all (spray skirt to close the kayaks). … The only (small) possible improvement would have been a shared snack or drink.
Under cloud the midnight sun does not show, but guests still liked the fjord and the explanations. There is no snack on the water; the hot drink is served at the base in Hamnøy.
Questions travellers ask
When is the midnight sun in Lofoten?
On a flat horizon the sun stays up from 26 May to 18 July 2027 in Svolvær and from 28 May to 17 July in Reine, according to US Naval Observatory data. Visit Lofoten gives a shorter window of 28 May to 14 July.
Will I see the sun at midnight in Reine?
Not necessarily from the village itself, because high mountains rise right behind it. The evening tours head out onto the fjord or to the open north-facing coast, where the low sun is easier to see.
Can I see the northern lights in summer?
No. From early May to early August the sky over Svolvær does not get darker than twilight. Visit Lofoten gives the northern lights season as September to April.
Do I need a car for a midnight sun tour?
For some of them, yes. The Hov stable on Gimsøya has no pickup and reviewers say it is hard to reach without a car, and the Saga base in Hamnøy has its own parking. The van tour starts at Svinøya in Svolvær.
What should I wear at midnight in July?
Warm layers, a hat and a windproof jacket. The July average at Svolvær airport is 13.3 °C, and the tour operators ask you to bring warm clothing for the late hours.
