Most aurora tours start in Svolvær in the evening and drive to wherever the sky is clear. The season runs from September to April, and no one can promise a display.

Visit Lofoten gives the main season as September to April and adds two plain conditions: it has to be dark, and the sky has to be clear. The second one is the hard part on this coast. Store norske leksikon notes that the weather in Lofoten and Vesterålen differs a lot over short distances, which is why the guides keep driving until they find a gap in the clouds.

In summer the question does not arise. From early May to early August the nights in Svolvær never get darker than civil twilight, and the sky is simply too bright for the northern lights.

When it gets dark enough

Darkness comes early in the heart of winter. On 1 November 2026 the sun sets in Svolvær at 15:15. On 1 December it is up only from 10:46 to 12:55, and from 7 December 2026 to 5 January 2027 it does not rise at all. On 21 December civil twilight ends at 14:35, so the sky is dark from mid-afternoon. By 1 February 2027 sunset has moved to 15:09, by 1 March to 17:07, and on 1 April, after the change to summer time, the sun sets at 20:02. Late in the season you wait longer into the evening for a dark sky.

Autumn and early winter are also the wettest months. At the Kongsmarka station near Svolvær the long-term average is 294 millimetres of precipitation in October and 286 in December, while June is the driest month. Clear nights are possible in every month of the season, but you cannot count on them, so plan more than one evening if the aurora matters to you.

How the tours work

None of the shared tours follows a fixed route. The guide checks the cloud and aurora forecasts and drives to wherever the chances look best, sometimes to a beach, sometimes along a fjord or away from village lights. Most trips last about four hours; the Raido Adventures tour takes five and one evening hunt with food is listed at eight.

Group size is where the tours differ most. RAW Lofoten takes at most seven guests in a Mercedes V-Class with a panoramic glass roof and hands out wool blankets and hot drinks; children under 10 cannot join. Hooked on Lofoten runs a van for up to eight from its office in Kabelvåg, with pickup in and around Kabelvåg and Svolvær. Lofoten Lights may use a minibus for up to 15 people at peak times. Bravo Travelling sets its limit at 20 and is the only operator here that lends thermal suits. Reviewers of the Lofoten Insight tour describe three minibuses of eight people with one guide, as well as trips that went ahead under full cloud and ended after two to two and a half hours instead of four.

Raido Adventures picks up at several points in Svolvær, serves warm drinks and food, and lights a bonfire when the weather allows. Reviewers mostly praise the guide; a critical review from December 2024 found the photos poor.

Photos and cameras

Many tours take the pictures for you. Raido sends its photos by link within 72 hours. Lofoten Insight promises them within 48 hours and gives a short introduction to night photography. Lofoten Lights sends a professional photographer and includes a tripod. On the Raido tour and the Lofoten Aktiv van you bring your own tripod if you want one. If photography is the main point of your trip, our page on photo tours covers the daytime side as well.

If the sky stays cloudy

Read the weather rule of a tour before you book. RAW Lofoten offers free rebooking or a refund if the weather cancels the trip. Bravo Travelling states that it gives no refunds for weather or for nights without aurora, and one guest in March 2026 says a refund was promised and then refused. The private beach-camp tour of Heart of Lofoten only runs when there is at least some chance of a display, but once booked it cannot be cancelled for a refund. Reviewers of the Lofoten Aktiv van mention nights with no aurora and no offer to rebook, and one found the tour rushed. That van runs from early autumn to mid-April and leaves from the tourist information in Svolvær.

Leaving from Kabelvåg, Henningsvær or the harbour

Not every tour starts in Svolvær itself. Kabelvåg, a ten-minute drive west, is the base of Hooked on Lofoten, which also runs a private three-hour trip in a Mercedes EQV with snacks; a photographer costs extra on that one. Henningsvær, about 26 kilometres from Svolvær on its small islands, has its own evening chase in a premium Mercedes with warm drinks and snacks, meeting at Hellandsgata 11.

The only trip by water is the evening cruise of Brim Explorer. It leaves from the pier on the main square, next to the Paleo Arctic restaurant at Torget 22, and heads into the Vestfjord, the Austnesfjord or Raftsundet depending on where the sky looks clearest. The ship has a toilet on board, a small tasting is included, and it is wheelchair accessible.

If you stay in the west, around Reine or Å, remember that the drive from there to Svolvær takes well over two hours each way, so an evening tour from Svolvær makes a very long night.

Dressing for a night outside

Lofoten has the mildest winter climate at this latitude. The average at Svolvær airport is +0.3 °C in January and −0.4 °C in February, but the station recorded −7.6 °C on 22 January 2025 and −10 °C on 17 January 2024. On an aurora tour you stand still in the open for long stretches. The tours ask you to bring warm clothing, a hat, gloves and warm shoes, and Hooked on Lofoten points out that it does not supply winter clothing. See what to wear in Lofoten for a full list, and polar night and midnight sun for the light through the year.

Lucas was a fantastic guide and tutor on taking pictures of the Northern Lights. He got us to a fabulous 360 viewpoint where we could see the lights all around and helped us set up cameras.

The tour guide Marie is very knowledgeable and friendly. … We saw a magnificent northern lights several times within a couple hours.

★★★★★ Wing (Hong Kong) · December 2024

During the peak of the aurora, he went to look for his lost hat. Everyone was waiting in the car for him to search. … After requesting, he took one photo for us when the aurora was very faint.

Nearly every review mentions the bonfire, warm drinks and help with photography, mostly with the guide Lucas (Lukas). The single one-star review is about photos and the guide's attention.

Questions travellers ask

When is the northern lights season in Lofoten?

Visit Lofoten gives the main season as September to April. You need darkness and a clear sky. From early May to early August the nights in Svolvær never get darker than twilight, so the aurora cannot be seen.

Are the northern lights guaranteed?

No. Visit Lofoten states that the aurora cannot be guaranteed. Some tours offer free rebooking or a refund if the weather cancels the trip, while others state that there is no refund for cloud or a quiet sky.

Do I need my own camera?

Not always. Several tours include photos of you under the sky, sent by link after the trip. If you bring a camera, check whether a tripod is included, because some tours lend one and others ask you to bring your own.

Can I join a tour if I stay in Reine?

The tours on this page start around Svolvær, Kabelvåg and Henningsvær. From Reine to Svolvær is a drive of well over two hours each way, so staying in the east makes evening tours much easier.

How cold is it on a northern lights tour?

The coast is mild, with January averaging +0.3 °C at Svolvær airport, but nights of −7 to −10 °C occur and you stand still outside for long periods. One minibus tour lends thermal suits; on the others you bring your own warm layers.
